We have half an acre of land which is near a stream. For now I’ve planted some vegetables of different types which are doing quite well because of the water from the stream. We have about 15 chickens and some bananas that are still young because we’re still settling.
I say congratulations for the Lugari Community Resource Centre because I have really learned a lot since it started. I was behind as I didn’t know what to do as a farmer. Now I’m planting different varieties of vegetables because of what I’ve learned from the resource center. I never would have tried to plant these without the resource center. Using the teaching, I tried.
I have been taught on the preparation of land. I learned how to use your own manure at home, you don’t need to buy fertilizer. I learned how to use the correct type of fertilizer on crops, how and when to plant different types of crops and how you manage them. I learned about diseases and their signs and how to control them for different crops.
I learned about water harvesting: water catchments, roofing, boreholes for extra water.
Poultry farming: how to rear and manage different types of chickens; diseases, control, symptoms, medicines, the importance of rearing chickens and selling them for money and to raise the living standard of someone.
I learned about livestock production, types of cattle to rear (dairy, beef, dual), which type you can rear on which type of land. I learned about milk and meat, how to rear and manage cattle, about their diseases and symptoms and how to control them. My shortcut with a sick animal used to be to slaughter it. Now I know how to identify the disease and I can get the right medicine.
The centre has taught me how to deal with a small piece of land and sustain our life. We were at a low standard of living because our land was so small, but now I’ve learned that I can grow many different short season crops to sustain our living standard by selling them and planting others.
I’m thankful for the Rotary Club because it has taught me how to deal with different people and help other people in need. I’m now exposed to that.
I had no knowledge about the computer before and as per the introduction part of it, it has made me have a very big interest to learn and be familiar about it. If the computer course prospers and I accomplish the computer course, I can find a job that requires computer skills. I will complete the computer course.
After 5 years, I will complete my courses here I will be so different from what I am now. I will be exposed to much more, like computers. I would like to have a poultry project on our farm that will be a role model to the community and that will teach the community on how to benefit from poultry keeping. I will improve our farm by planting different types of crops and by having a water pump to get irrigation from the stream. Then I will have a very nice portion of land. I will get income to make machines to help irrigation.
Congratulations to LCRC and I encourage it to get a lot of computers so that everybody can learn skills and everybody can benefit from them. If in 3 days we’ve learned what we did with only a couple of computers, imagine what we could do if we had more!
If the LCRC will bring other courses, I’m ready to learn it! I want to be more exposed from what I have. I want to know everything!
I feel so glad that the center has let me meet so many friends from Canada and all over the world. It will also make me travel from here and see other countries, because we share a lot of character.
